Constellations by Campfire: The Easy and Naked Eye Way is a series of books to help you learn the star constellations of the night sky of the Northern Hemisphere using only your curious mind and naked eyes.
I created them because they are the kind of books that I wish I would’ve had when I was first trying to learn about the night sky.
I became interested in the night sky as just a young girl, I think it was around eight-years-old, when I was first introduced to the concept of star constellations.
My interest was piqued about it because at the same time, I was reading everything I could find to read about Greco-Roman mythology. Maybe it was the influence of the movies that were being run over and over on the cable movie channels…long before the days of streaming movies online, who knows, but it’s safe to say that my interest in reading all the Greco-Roman mythological stories at that time was noticeable.
My father is the one who noticed how many of these mythology books I was bringing home with me from the library and while we were sitting on the porch one warm night, he pointed up to the sky and showed me that the stories I was reading about ended up being “real” star constellations in the sky. He also informed me about the constellations of the zodiac and how that ties into astrology and I was hooked.
That Summer, my father gave me a book to help me learn the night sky, complete with fold out star maps of the constellations.
I trashed the book by the second Summer I had it. Those fold out star maps just didn’t last long on dewey grass, being folded and unfolded a zillion times while I was trying to orient myself under the night sky to what I saw on the star map.
Much information that I learned about the night sky and mythology stuck with me, but much of it was just confusing, or had BIG missing pieces – things I wouldn’t know were missing until much later in life. After we made the discoveries that we did, it finally did all make sense.
The books were written after we first shared our discoveries and then developed an ongoing conversation with a woman “D” who found our work almost right away and has been a wonderful supporter of since.
When she asked many of her wonderful questions about how we made these discoveries in the first place and what kind of knowledge did I specifically have before that allowed me to be able to do it…I related the story about how I became initially interested in the night sky as a child and knew I had to write the series of books that would have made learning about all of this much easier than how I ended up doing it.
I thank “D” abundantly for all the inspirational conversation and those synchronistic questions she always asks.
